The textiles and jute minister, Abdul Latif Siddiqui, on Wednesday urged the jute researchers to invent high quality jute and jute seeds.
He was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of a seven-day exhibition of jute goods at Manik Mia Avenue in the city.
Bangladesh Jute Research Institute organised the exhibition marking the Independence and National Day 2009. Organisers said 60 stalls had been set up in the fair.
The minister said the traditional use of jute would have to be discarded and the total jute sector would be modernised and made time-befitting.
Increased use of jute and jute goods will create employment opportunities and save the people from environment pollution, he added.
Jute Diversification Promotion Centre executive director Dr ABM Abdullah also spoke at the inaugural ceremony.
The JDPC is working to set up 265 industrial units to produce jute goods, he added.
