UK-based Coats has added to its range of environmentally friendly products with the global launch of 100% organic cotton threads under the EcoVerde brand.
Certified to GOTS by the Institute for Marketecology (IMO) in Switzerland, the Coats EcoVerde organic cotton sewing thread is made from high quality Giza organic cotton fibre, and has been mercerised for superior lustre and strength. Under GOTS mercerisation is allowed with certain auxiliaries and all alkaline must be recycled.
As with other products in the EcoVerde brand the cotton line is available in a range of counts and colours and is designed for use primarily in apparel. In particular, the cotton threads are recommended for sewing post-dyed organic garments. The mercerised finish is said to increase the affinity of the thread to the dyestuffs used for dyeing the garments. However, the Coats EcoVerde organic cotton range can also be made available in a wide selection of colours from the Coats Global Colour Reference range.
Also recently available under the EcoVerde brand is an environmentally friendly polyester thread range made from recycled plastic (PET) bottles, which has been designed to meet Oeko-Tex standards. “With hundreds of millions of empty plastic bottles clogging landfill sites all over the world, the disposal of this very useful household container is a real problem,” Coats says. “Recycling PET bottles into filaments and fibres and converting this basic textile raw material into yarn and fabrics is a useful way of alleviating this problem.”
EcoVerde environmentally friendly products are available from Coats’ owned and operated manufacturing and distribution operations in 71 countries worldwide.
