The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association is set to hold its biennial election tomorrow electing new leaderships to operate the country’s premier industry organisation for next two years.
Two panels of candidates are mainly vying to have majority in the 27-member executive board of the BGMEA. The majority winners will elect one president and three vice-presidents as the office bearers.
One panel under the banner of Sammlita Parishad is led by Abdus Salam Murshedy, managing director of the Envoy Group and another- Forum- is led by M Shahadat Hossain Kiron, chairman and managing director of the Dekko Group.
Both the panels completed their months’ long hectic election campaigns on Saturday.
Talking with New Age on Sunday both Murshedy and Kiron said if elected they would dedicate them for the betterment of industry pursuing Bangladesh garment exporters’ interests locally and in recession-hit global markets.
‘Ensuring security of investment of the garment manufactures is one of my priorities,’ said Murshey who also listed infrastructure development and greater market access among other his priorities.
He said his team would have more efficient negotiations with the government in solving the problems of the entrepreneurs who have started feeling heat of global recession,’ said Murshedy, a top footballer in 80s and then turned him as a successful entrepreneur.
Shahadat Hossain said industry is facing a severe threat from global economic recession so he would take the issue as his priority.
‘My team will go to the government seeking immediate supports to the exporters who face increased competitions from the importers on or price cuts,’ said Kiron.
Kiron said improved owner-worker relation and improvement of infrastructures will be included in his mission if he is elected as the leader of garment entrepreneurs.
Both Kiron and Murshey are hopeful that nearly $12 billion worth of annual garment export earnings could be doubled within a few years if the industry gets active supports from the government.
The BGMEA is the largest trade body in apparel sector with a total 2678 registered members who will elect their leaders tomorrow.
